The Kids

There is a danger that in reading our report of the conditions at Buhinga, people might the impression of a downtrodden school population. This could not be further from the truth. We were greeted by 1600 enthusiastic, energetic youngsters, full of all the beans that you would expect from children of that age. The older children (around 14 years old) were deep in preparation for their final exams, an area where the school has a strong record of achievement. In every class we walked into, the children we relaxed yet attentive and there was a clear desire to learn. It was the energy of these kids, both in and out of the classroom that really made the deepest impression on the us as we walked around. Despite the conditions around them, these are happy children, which is a testament not only to their teachers, but to the people of Fort Portal as a whole.
