Boxer FAQs

If you’re interested in participating in our 2016 event, you’ll no doubt have some questions. Please take a look at our FAQs below, and if you’ve anything further to ask please email admin@universalchance.org and we’ll get it added.

  • Q: What level of experience is required?
  • A: No experience at all is necessary, although equally if you’ve boxed before this doesn’t exclude you either. Our trainers will be looking to match opponents based on ability for the night.

  • Q: What time commitments are required?
  • A: This is somewhat up to you as an individual, but we would be expecting participants to partake in regular training leading up to the event. Evening group training sessions will be arranged on a weekly basis in a central London location (previously this was The Boxing Clinic in Angel) but you a free to train in smaller groups or individually if the timing/location doesn’t work for you. You will need to attend some sparring sessions with the whole group closer to the event such that we can ensure there is a suitable opponent.

  • Q: What fundraising commitments are required?
  • A: This is, first and foremost, a fund raising event for Universal Chance so there is a level of expectation on boxers to be able to help us make it a success. Funds are primarily raised via tickets for the night so we would expect each boxer to be able to sell 15-20 tickets as well as taking sponsorship via JustGiving (or similar).

  • Q: If I sign up, am I guaranteed a place on the night?
  • A: There are a number of factors here – to ensure we can fill the bill on the evening we will normally require 2-3 times as many people training initially as we have spots available. Past experience has shown that this is necessary due to drop outs, injuries or people just not being able to give the time required. We will do everything possible to be able to accommodate as many as possible but I’m afraid we cannot guarantee this.

  • Q: I’d like to give training a try, but I’m not sure I want to commit to fighting on the night – is this ok?
  • A: As per the above – this is absolutely fine. Boxing is an incredibly fun and physically demanding sport – some people love it for exactly this reason but for others it’s just not for them, but until you try it you’ll never know!

  • Q: Ok – I’ve heard enough, when do we start!?
  • A: All communications will be sent out via our mailing list so if you’re not sure if you’ve been added to this please email admin@universalchance.org and we will add your name. We are planning a social event on 14th April in central London with the charity trustees, fighters from our previous events and for anyone keen to find out more so it would be great to see you there (full details will be shared via the mailing list and posted here once confirmed).
